Summer Highlights
at Ragdale

Ragdale Ring

400 guests enjoyed poetry readings, music, and the scenic outdoors at the Ragdale Ring Summer Performances. The performances took place on the award-winning Ragdale Ring competition stage, designed by DRAWINGS which provided an intimate space for guests to enjoy a memorable summer evening. Before each performance, many guests picnicked along the Shaw Prairie behind the Ragdale campus.

The Ring Performance season launched in June with the poetry of Reginald Gibbons and acclaimed chamber music of the Juliani Ensemble. A cocktail party for Ragdale supporters in July, prior to the Quartet 23 performance and reading by poet Kenyatta Rogers, highlighted a perfect summer evening, August’s performance featured poet Simone Muench and the stellar team of Soprano, Tracy Cantin and Jazz Guitarist, Dave Miller, concluding a well-attended series of music and poetry.

Ragdale’s 14th Annual
High School Arts Week

Ragdale’s annual program for regional high school students featured a creative writing class led by Margaret Hawkins, author and Senior Lecturer at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a birding and visual arts class guided by Joelle Mercedes, multimedia artist and educator.

Ragdale Tours

Ragdale conducted its annual docent led tours of the architecturally, artistically, and naturally historic Ragdale campus. These tours offer rare glimpses behind the scenes of an artist residency program. Tour attendees had the chance to explore the expansive seven-acre campus, which encompasses three historic properties: Ragdale House and the Ragdale Barnhouse designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw and constructed in 1897; and the Farmhouse built in 1838 — the first European American home built in Lake County.

The Ragdale House, the Farmhouse, and the Barnhouse are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Artists in Residence

Ragdale welcomed three sessions of artists — a diverse range from various disciplines, including poets, photographers, painters, musicians, and composers. Among these talented artists were many recipients of Ragdale Fellowships, who brought their unique perspectives and amazing work to the Ragdale community.

Ragdale's Gardens

A beautiful year of bounty has been in the Ragdale Garden! Spring ushered in new blooms, bushels of fresh peas, and a variety of tender greens. By late Summer we harvested beans, garlic, onions, tomatoes, squashes, riots of flowers, and so much more. Our residents appreciated Chef Linda’s preparation of garden-to-table meals. We look forward to harvesting pumpkins, winter squashes, hardy greens, and our Scarlet Runner Beans. Special thanks to Leider Greenhouses and Rosborough Partners for their generous donations of annuals, planted and maintained by our dedicated crew of volunteers. Many thanks to Jan and Rich Berggreen, Fanny Gonzalez, Del Grapes, Ellie Krall, and Laurie Schaffner, who together donated over one-hundred hours (and counting) of their time and energy; the beauty of our gardens reflect their care and generosity.

Ragdale Themed Residencies & Creative Sabbaticals

Apart from our competitive application Artists Residency Program, Ragdale welcomes groups of up to 12 emerging, amateur and professional of all disciplines for stays of three or six-days. Examples include visual art and music groups, dance and theater companies, performance artists, writing groups, and arts administrators. As in all residencies offered, Ragdale encourages exploration and experimental use of time spent together in a retreat setting.

Similar to Themed Residencies, Creative Sabbaticals are offered as three- or six-day residencies for individual artists working in any discipline. Designed for individual artists, curators, arts administrators, and others in the creative field, these stays allow artists to benefit from the unique setting and accommodations Ragdale offers. Themed Residencies and Sabbaticals use a sliding scale fee based on income and are scheduled during non-residency session.

Applications are required for consideration. For more information, including available dates, accommodations, and studio facilities, please contact
Deanna Miera at [email protected] or 847-234-1063 X. 23.

In Remembrance

Christopher Holabird
February 19, 1927- June 16, 2023

Christopher, along with members of the Holabird family, was deeply involved and supportive of Ragdale for decades.

The Holabirds helped fund construction of the former Friends Studio, which housed an art and music studio, built in 1980 along with Alice Judson Ryerson Hayes, granddaughter of Howard Van Doren Shaw and Frances Wells Shaw to commemorate the long friendship of their mothers, Sylvia Shaw and Dorothy Holabird.

The Friends Bench honors this memory by incorporating the Max Kahn weathervane that stood atop the studio.

The Friends Bench inscription: WHICHEVER WAY THE WIND BLOWS FRIENDS FOREVER- SYLVIA SHAW & DOROTHY HOLABIRD
