Ragdale Ring
Summer Picnic & Performances

The annual Ragdale Ring performances return to the site of the original 1912 outdoor stage designed by architect Howard Van Doren Shaw and built for his poet and playwright wife, Frances Wells Shaw and their many artistic friends. With Ragdale’s recent acquisition of the former home of Evelyn Shaw and John T. McCutcheon, which reunited the original Ragdale campus, this year’s performances will offer guests an intimate experience to sit and enjoy memorable performances on the original ring “stage.”

Ragdale Ring Design Contest Winners

Architect Howard Van Doren Shaw designed the original Ragdale Ring, on his family’s Arts & Crafts country estate, as an outdoor theater to accommodate the plays of his wife, Frances Wells Shaw and other creative performances by friends. Audiences of over 200 guests sat on the Shaw-designed benches in a circular orchestra paved with grass and surrounded by the low limestone wall.

In 2013, Ragdale launched an international competition to reinterpret Shaw’s Ring. Ragdale invites architects, artists, and designers to apply for the opportunity to design, build, and exhibit a new interpretation of the Ragdale Ring, a temporary theatre to house concerts and performances. A jury of architects, artists, and architectural historians select a single project to realize at full scale on Ragdale’s grounds.

The winning design for the 2023 Ragdale Ring competition goes to “Garden Room Table Room,” designed by DRAWINGS, a partnership made up of Daniel Garcia and William Smith. Garcia and Smith founded DRAWINGS in 2020 while pursuing their Master in Architecture degrees at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Based out of Brooklyn, NY and Portland, OR, Drawings operates out of two very different contexts in order to leverage their unique advantages. DRAWINGS embraces the inherent potential found in contrasting elements and ideas.

Call for Ragdale Garden Volunteers!

Spring has officially sprung, and the Ragdale Vegetable Garden is bursting with fresh spinach, peas, onions, lettuces and more!

Might you like to volunteer in the Garden? It is a fun and relaxing way to spend time outdoors, get your hands in the dirt, and learn to grow your own food.

Help Ragdale’s Chef Linda enhance her garden-to-table dinners for the many artist-in-residents.

No prior gardening experience is needed. All volunteers work under the direction and supervision of Ragdale’s Garden and Land Manager, Jess Sladek. If you are interested in volunteering in the garden for the 2023 season, please email: [email protected]

Ragdale Retreats

Ragdale has never in its history been available for occupancy to the general public — until now. Modeled after our very successful artist-in-residence program, the Ragdale Retreat experience uses art as a means to help guests exercise their creative skills and indulge in diverse activities led by Ragdale’s acclaimed alumni. All retreat profits go to Ragdale as charitable donations to help support our artist residency program.
